Intro about me and my project

Post by cartenz »

Hi everyone.

I have a 1984 Mercedes-Benz 380SE as a "project" car and one of the TO DO items is to get rid of the K-Jet (mechanical fuel injection) for an EFI setup. I have been looking into off-the-shelf options for an ECU for a while, but I think this system actually might be the way to go... maybe.

Being that there is no stock EFI system to replace, I am having to add TPS, Crank angle sensor, a wide-band O2 sensor (stock is narrow-band) and MAP sensor... probably forgetting a few more ATM. Since Im basically having to build the EFI system from scratch why not the ECU too?

No the real reason I'm looking at this as an option is the cost. A Haltech is 3 times the price, they ECU being sold by the guys making up my fuel rails is twice the price. If I can save my self a couple of hundred dollars, thats my motivation.

In regards to contributing back to the project (its the idea of opensource right?) I'll be happy to help where I can, but I'm not that good with code so I cant really help with software development. If anyone else is/has used this system to rid themselves of the tyranny of the K-Jet (I dont really hate the K-jet... that much), feel free to share your experience--I did search around for MB's but, hey I'm still new here.

Hello and welcome along. Have you found the wiki? http://rusefi.com/wiki/index.php?title=Manual:Start-a-project/en

About OpenSource, no objects if you want to help with the development, however it's not required. As well a newbie at something like code can often make for more work for the primary developer than if they simply did it them selves. But not always, if you find some small bug and suggest a patch it's entirely possible that it simply hasn't been looked at yet or something like that. It's handy if a bug is found and it's reported something like this. I found a bug, here's a patch. However it's also handy to simply get a bug report. We have limited resources and day jobs, so we would like to get what ever feedback we can get.

Do you know what crank wheel pattern, or what sensing technology you plan to use? Are you using hall or VR?
Welcome to the friendlier side of internet crazy :)

1984 y.o. MB's k-jet had o2 sensors? may be a knock sensor as well?
in my dad's audi k-jet, there is a double switch as a tps (which is used to detect fully open and fully closed conditions). It doesn't have any o2 sensors.
right now my daily driver audi will have a converted ke-jet. The full cost of this project was somewhat 500-550usd, job included.

To Kb1gtt:

I honestly dont know the sensors I will be using, I'm still in the planning stage, still not even put my money where my mouth is and bought a board. I was going to go VR, I think it might be the easier option for this engine, just going by what I have read on other peoples m116/m117 conversions. Of the ones I read about, only about 3 decided to add hall-effect sensors.

To Puff:

There is no TPS on the Benz k-jet, I know the ke-jet on my old Volvo had one, but MB decided they didnt need one. A lot of the threads on converting a w126 to EFI say to pull a TPS out an old Volvo or 5-series, but I'm going to buy one new off the people making my fuel rail so there is more chance it works (and I know it will fit the TB). I dont think the first series (80-86) of the w126 had a knock sensor, but the second series (86-91) I think did? They went to ke-jet systems for the second series. I can look this up, I'm just having a mental blank (1:30am here in Australia) atm.
