BMW V8 T-bucket build

Post by Mykk »

Hello.

I am currently experimenting with a Mega100 running RusEFI firmware in a Speeduino UA4C. Had the first test drive yesterday, the VE started dialing in with VEAL and target AFR's were getting met relatively quickly. I am still learning the In's & Out's of this system and it's specific tuning procedures, So far I am impressed. I did blow an on-board fuse on the Mega100 and it killed the test drive. Jumpered the fuse with guidance from ggurov. I still need to diag what exactly popped the fuse on the 5v rail. It happened while I was getting comfortable on the test drive and pushed the throttle past 50%, then everything shut down. We are back up and running now and I can continue to test, tune & diag.

However, for your entertainment I'd like to share the build progress on my latest project. Building my 2nd BMW powered T-bucket. The first one has been on the road for just over 3 years and it took 4 years to build. I wasn't planning on building another one but I knew I could do things cleaner and apply all the lessons learned from the first one.

Keep in mind there is nothing traditional about this build, I am putting it together using ideas that are in my head.

...and we are caught up to my current progress on the build. It is still just a bunch of random parts laid out in mock up.

A special thanks to Jhelgesen who made the supercharger adapter on the BMW v8 in build #1. He also made the SendCutSend file for my differential mount perch on build #2. He has also made two sets of intake spacers for my projects, one under the supercharger and the other I can use to adapt over the ITB manifolds for build #2. I think he's made more parts for my projects then I have.

EDIT: Derp, I thought I posted in the "You and your build" section. Mods please move, Thanks!

The engine in the frame is an early 2000's M62TUB44, 4.4L. The first generation of variable intake cams. Not only are the "vanos" variable cam servos problematic, this engine has the Achilles Tendon U shaped timing chain guide.

Picked up two more BMW V8's:

Both mid-late 90's, one is a M60B40 4.0L and the other is a M62B44 4.4 without the "vanos". One engine has the desirable larger displacement the other has the desirable bigger cams and double row timing chains with a timing idler gear rather than the U-guide. The M60B40 also uses a front mounted 60-2 crank trigger on the harmonic damper and is easier to adapt over to the Cherry GS100502 hall sensor I like to use on standalones. The M62B44 uses a flywheel trigger, also a 60-2, with the sensor mounted in the transmission bellhousing.

The plan is to combine the two engines to make one, granted nothing detrimental happened between them. The engine in Bucket #1 is also a M62B44 with M60B40 cams and timing chains.

The transmission of choice in both Buckets is a Getrag 420G 6-speed manual, Bucket #1 has a lightweight single mass flywheel with a larger "E34 540i" clutch. I plan to run the stock dual mass flywheel and smaller "E39 540i" clutch in build #2, simply because I have them.

This forum does not have a "Like" button option, so I have to make a post to show appreciation. Being an American, your choice of engine is not what I would opt for, but I can appreciate the engineering genius you are executing. Just want to give you a quick "Kudos" and say, awesome job!

Thank you mpgmike, I couldn't bring myself to do another small block chevy/th350 in a fiberglass tbucket. The unusual drivetrain choice that still has a neat look and makes all the right sounds has been my niche on these builds.

My attempt at a digital dash with a Raspberry Pi5. With the tank behind the dash I was concerned about fitting mechanical gauges. I figured a digital dash could be neat and wouldn't take the space needed by gauges.

If you'd like to hear me talk for 25 minutes about how I set it up, here ya go:

The problem is.... once it was done and in the car, I just didn't like the look of it.

Instead I'll try with this old school style finned aluminum gauge bezel and shallow mechanical gauges to fit over the curve of the tank.
