1992 Volvo 245 with a surprise

Hi gang! My project car is a 1992 Volvo 240 estate. Here she is before I ripped her heart out:.



And the surprise looks like this:



370bhp stock, with over 400 easily available with a pulley upgrade and more aggressive mapping. I'm also lucky enough that the car is registered 4 months before it would be legally required to have catalytic converters, so that should free up a few more horses too.

I've also heard that Aston Martin exhaust manifolds add 30bhp. If the stock ones are that restrictive I can see myself making up some tubular ones- I'm never happier than when I've got a welder in my hand!

Oh, and don't be in a hurry to see it finished. The only funds that are available for this project come from tips at work and the few services and minor car repairs I get to do at home, so things happen pretty slowly. I'm lucky, though, that I will have the entire car to hand, so I'll be able to use lots of stock stuff like engine mounts, saving money and time.

Sweet ride. Looks like you are a EU person. I see the longish plates in the background. Good to hear you are cat free. I don't understand why the regulatory folks are so bent on sticking those furry little critters up your exhaust

Hey same! Mines a 1992, however. I’ve heard there’s some finagling involved with the FI computer and the ignition computer.
Any idea how you’ll start the rusefi conversion?

that was my plan initially, but with an M90 instead.

Then, i was offered a whiteblock M90 so stripped the engine out and bought a T5 engine to go in it. M90 never materialised and they tripled in price all of a sudden.

Then, i was offered this XJR in a deal I couldn't refuse. It weighs pretty much the same as a redblock but makes nearly 400bhp and that amazing noise only a V8 can make. If you ask around you'll be told there's no manual transmission that fits the V8, but there is.

I haven't owned a V8 in nearly 30 years, so I'm giddy like a schoolkid about the prospect of my very own supercharged V8 Volvo 245

Completely different engine, it has come from a 1998 Jaguar XJR with 78,000 miles. 4.0L supercharged, 370bhp DOHC 32 valve AJ-V8

The car is already converted! It was a bit easier since I was already on MegaSquirt when I switched to RusEfi, so I just cut off the connector and switched in the RusEfi connectors. For the initial conversion I cut off the EZK and LH 2.4 connectors, and wired everything to the standalone. I moved some stuff around (switched to a different coolant temp sensor, added IAT, deleted MAF, converted to a potentiometer TPS, sequential injection, wasted spark, etc), so there isn't a huge amount of original wiring harness left.

Actually, it looks like I'm going to have to convert the engine from a front sump to a rear sump, which is going to be a pain, but it will all be worth it in the end

The donor jag, not reliable. However the engine is typically reliability. The car is full of many many non-important bits which when they break cause the car to be non-usable. For example, the duel fuel pumps sounds great. However when one breaks they both fail. The car is full of garbage like that. The engine is OK once you remove most of the extra garbage which removes air leaks, stupid failures, etc.

Rotten as a pear. Jaguar's corrosion problems were they reason they went over to a all aluminium monocoque later on.

What year is the donor? Are these known to be reliable?

This is a 1998 model. The engine is pretty reliable although these 4.0 engines had timing chain tensioner problems. To do all four chains and the tensioners isn't a massive job 2hilst the engine is on the stand, and will cost me about £200 in parts. It won't need doing again. The car has done 87,000 miles

Mean to say that old Volvo is in a better condition? Anyways, it reminds me of a similar (probably also Volvo, or was it an old Toyota?) turbocharge project somewhere in California, they had a small race with a Porsche Cayenne)

The guy who owned the Volvo before me oiled the underside 4 times a year when he did an oil change. The underside of the car is completely solid. The only rot on the car that I know of is the valance behind the rear bumper, where they all go. I'll get round to fixing it the first winter after the car is back on the road
