Smart Relay + CanBus
Smart Relay + CanBus
Would something like this be possible but instead of +12v Or GND Activation Can Would activate the relays ?
Something like this Would be Very useful for MicroRus Or any Standalone, really ...

Re: Smart Relay + CanBus
Yes, current technology makes this possible.
Looks like a PDM.
Are you looking to buy one unit? Are you looking to invest and own design? Are you looking to preorder 20 units?
Why not use Motec pdm15?

motec is overpriced look this up https://www.drtracing.com/shop/hardwire-electronics-pdm-15/
I'm willing to make an open source version invest, sure why not

Re: Smart Relay + CanBus
I really do not want to put this conversation out of its rails, but, making a pdm with only can connectivity it is not what the most people want.
Aftermarket ecu’s are used by people that have the same steering wheel that came out of factory with their cars, same handbrake etc.
The want additional freedom for their cars with these ecu’s.
Or maybe they want to EFI power their cars.
Most of people they do not want keypads to turn on hazards, or to use the wipers.
I am saying these, because every PDM that I see, uses keypad as input method.
On the other hand, the most clever project that I saw is this:
https://www.motogadget.com/shop/en/m-unit-blue.html
This moto PDM is the future of a PDM that people that bought an aftermarket ecu, will invest in right after!
This module has great functionalities without even using CAN.
Imagine cars swapping to this, an having safty futures as warning hassards after a sunden de-acceleration.
Having “alarm” features by just connecting cars horn!
Keyless car start out of box! (personaly I gound this future a security trap, but it is there!)
Can connectivity is the goal to run the FAN after a temperature threshold.
So Can connectivity for keybads it is not the real goal.

Re: Smart Relay + CanBus
Giving one example to make my point clear:
My car used conventional lamps for everything!
I replaced each one of them with led!
My new problem now is that due to very bad engineering every time that I press the clutch pedal (which shares same structure with the brake pedal) for 1 sec the break light turns on!
So a clever PDM should have a functionality to prevent this!
Check the input signal and if it is above some limit, turn on the brake lights!

Re: Smart Relay + CanBus
Most of my customers as well as myself are big fans of programmable PDM. Mostly canbus based. The less wires in a car, the better for us. That however is just the view from my side, and not gospel.

Re: Smart Relay + CanBus
Ok, but I suppose that your clients are racing cars?
They are not restoring/resto-moding vw-beetles,minis etc.
Because you cannot use keypad to control wipers and blinkers in those cars!
Re: Smart Relay + CanBus
Id say its a 50/50 split. 50% pure racing, 50% daily drivers. Which most cars I work with already are canbus based to start with, which only makes sense to continue that route. I'd say restomods are more rare than anything else out there, and the same solution can be brought on with wiring said analog switches into the ECU, and send can commands to PDM. We do restorations often, and thats the general route I take. Creating a PDM that basically acts like a relay is redundant, because normally, people would rather pay $5 per relay, and go that route.stayros32001 wrote: ↑Fri Jul 15, 2022 2:49 pmOk, but I suppose that your clients are racing cars?

Re: Smart Relay + CanBus
I belive that the most ballanced solution is this:
https://www.ecumaster.com/products/pmu/
16 analog inputs + can-keypad
