Saying hello! NB1 Miata owner here, getting into rusEFI

Post by Gerry »

I actually vaguely heard about this project a little over a year ago when I was looking into the MegaSquirt platform. I was disgusted at the price and hardware of the MegaSquirts, plus its lack of openness. I remember there was some kind of ARM-based engine management option, but totally forgot about it. COVID hit, then I totally dropped everything car related. Now I'm back into my car, I took it to Miatas At The Gap this year, then I met Jessie from Beer Money Motorsports. I got interested in the pre-built rusEFI solutions he was selling, we talked for like an hour, then he told me to get on here and Slack! (by the way, can someone send me a Slack invite?)

I'm not super duper hardcore. I enjoy track days and autocross, but I don't have a trailer or do any wheel to wheel racing. The primary reason why I'm interested in standalone engine management for my NB1 is because I'm very much interested in flex fuel. Yes, I know that's boring for most of you, but I'd love to be able to fill up with pretty much any gas and let the computer do its thing. Sure, I'm also interested in tweaking gains from some bolt-ons, but I'm not going too crazy here. No forced induction; I live in Florida and want to track the car, so turbo heat-soak is a problem I simply don't want to deal with.

I know zero about tuning or engine management. I'm really more of a driver than a mechanic. I don't actually like wrenching on the car, but I do it because it allows me to drive the way I enjoy driving: at the limit and beating the living daylights out of it. However, I am a software engineer by trade and might have an opportunity to make a contribution or two. I already starred the project on GitHub.

When I get my pre-built rusEFI based ECU from Jessie, I'll be taking lots of notes and eventually distilling them into documentation contributions. I'd really love to make rusEFI so easy, any idiot (such as myself) could do it. The firmware looks fairly feature rich, but if I come across something I'd like to see, I'll take a stab at implementing it myself. But for now, I'll be hanging out as a general consumer that's simply interested in the product.

My car is a white 2000 Mazda Miata, NB1 if you will. I'm not much of a "mod the hell out of my car" type of guy. My mods are mostly based around making the car reliable at the track:
- Racing Beat header (California CAT delete, basically)
- Crossflow aluminum radiator
- Coolant reroute
- High temp brakes (track, Carbotech/G-Lock)
- Racing Beat hollow front sway bar
- SuperMiata Xida coilovers, track valved, 800 lbs/in front, 500 lbs/in rear
- Wheels and tires
- DeutschWorks fuel pump that's e85/flex-fuel ready
- Frame rails with butterfly brace

Coming soon:
- Lotus Elise seats (brackets just got here, need to install)
- Hard Dog roll bar

This is my fourth Miata!
- Blue 1999
- Red 1996
- Ceramic 2016 (blew transmission 3 times - I kind of hate NDs now)
- White 2000

Glad to be here!
