Re: Project Frankenstein - full ECU shield
Have you considered selling these as a "kit"? Presumably if you order the parts in quantity it will be cheaper than everyone buying them individually. It would make it a heckuva lot easier for someone who wanted to try it too... Perhaps recommend that they buy an assortment of 0805 resisto...

Re: Ford Festiva 1.3
88-89 carb had one type, 89 auto was its own thing (different wiring harness, ecu, distributor...) 90+ were the same. What year are you working with? If its a 90+ it should have an optical sensor, same as on my B6.sketchman wrote: Strange. There are 3 different types of dists that came in the Festiva.

Re: '92 Festiva with 1.6L SOHC
Everything is still hooked up in my car like it is from the factory, and I'm getting the signal by back-probing the the connector at the ECU. So the ECU is still hooked up to the circuit. The opto sensor has 12v going into it so I'm guessing there is an internal 5v regulator. I can "borrow"...

Re: '92 Festiva with 1.6L SOHC
With it hooked up like this, but not connected to the signal wire, I started the car - the tach values were all over the place. And the signal wire was not hooked up at all? I unhooked the 5v from the opamp and it dropped to zero. Then I hooked it back up and same thing - so I unhooked the ground th...

Re: '92 Festiva with 1.6L SOHC
Much better success tonight! I walked out to my car and was going to check the fuse in my DVM and realize immediately that I had the leads hooked up wrong for measuring current... doh. Here the meter on the left is showing the voltage on the signal wire (.3v) and current on the gnd wire (14.9mA) thi...

puff, that's what I did - rotated the engine by hand (but with the key "on" so that I had power to the sensor)
Good idea to check the fuse... it worked fine last time I used it but it has been a while. And yes, it is an optical sensor, same as the one I took pictures of.

Re: '92 Festiva with 1.6L SOHC
Do you have a multi-meter that can measure around 10mA of DC current? Can you measure the current in either the power wire or the ground wire for the optical sensor? Can you tell me what it reads both when the op-amp LED is bright, and when it is dim. Also what is the voltage? I know it's 5V, but i...

A little more info incase it will help anyone else down the road: The BP came with two different styles of distributor. Re: '92 Festiva with 1.6L SOHC
So, what do you we call your engine configuration file? Mazda 323? 90-93 Festiva (1.3l SOHC) and 90-94 mazda 323 (1.6l SOHC) use the same general engine management. Meaning, you can run the 323 engine on a Festiva ECU. The distributors are the same part number, VAF can be interchanged (although the...

Here are two more shots of the sensor from the distributor.
I found some info in one of my books on the CPS:

Re: '92 Festiva with 1.6L SOHC
The sensor has a 4 pin plug with only three wires, 12v, gnd, sig. I was hopeful that the other pin was there and ready to be used - so I tore the disty apart a bit further and there is nothing on the other pin :/ only one LED and it is inline with the four smaller slots, the spot for the other LED (...

Re: '92 Festiva with 1.6L SOHC
Indeed, I did not have a ground to the battery! I think it says Firmware N/A because I had already unplugged the board when I took the screen shot. Re: '92 Festiva with 1.6L SOHC
I put a 103 cap between signal and gnd. The values seemed to dance around slightly less, but it still said "noise" frequently. So I tried a 105 cap and I no longer got the "noise" value but it fluctuated a lot between ~200-4000. The range of numbers would increase if I revved the...

I wouldn't suggest anything smaller than 18 AWG carry more than an Ampere more than a few inches. Not necessarily because it can't, but because of the heat build up. You clearly said "an Ampere" and " a few inches". Nice of you to change your story though. I'm not trying to get ...

Re: harness extension system ideas?
The ampacity for 18ga wire is 14a. No offense, but your implication that 18ga wire with >2a current is a fire hazard is absurd. Can you share the calculations you've used to back this claim?? For example: I wire industrial control systems running 24v at ~1a with 22ga wire (short, 3-5' runs). Max pan...

Re: harness extension system ideas?
Are we talking about making an entire harness, or just an extension? 18ga is more than adequate for a few feet, especially if it isn't bundled tightly in a harness. Of course if it makes you feel better you can use thicker. Sure won't hurt! I'd be OK with just soldering the wires to the board throug...

Re: harness extension system ideas?
Just a quick google search yields several results that say that the .1" headers are rated for 3a - do any of the pins in the ECU need more than that? My intuition says that those headers/jumpers are larger than the pins in the ECU connector so everything should be fine. But I realize that isn't...

Re: harness extension system ideas?
I would think a breakout board with jumpers to select might be cheaper and cleaner. Breakout boxes are nice but you still end up with a bundle of wires that you have to plug/unplug individually. I'm thinking a board with a 4 x (ecu pin count) array of male pins. The center two pins would go to the c...
